Countdown to Ironman Mont-Tremblant: 25 Weeks // ups and downs

I don’t what it is about the number 25, but it doesn’t seem that far away…. Yikes!

Last week’s training was unfortunately, VERY uneventful.

Here’ why…

On Friday February 13th on my flight home from to Miami to Boston, I felt very nauseous on the plane. I figured it was just motion sickness from reading a magazine… I was downing gingerale on the flight, but it didn’t help.

Saturday morning I was still nauseous (I biked anyways, oops #notlisteningtomybody).

On Sunday I was nauseous and dizzy (I ran 12 miles anyways, oops.. I actually felt better while running, go figure).

By Monday morning, I was still nauseous, had no appetite, felt very fatigued and dizzy. I had NO energy whatsoever.  The COMPLETE opposite of what I usually am, always hungry and always moving. I attempted to go to work, only to leave early. All I wanted to do was sit on the couch and rest. I literally felt sea-sick and I couldn’t walk without feeling like I was swaying. what a horrible feeling! And no… I’m not pregnant, I promise. Ha.

These nasty symptoms continued into Tuesday and that’s when I started to get concerned. I made an appointment with my primary care physician, where she examined me and did lots of blood work (Mono, Thyroid, Liver Enzymes, etc) to make sure it was nothing serious.

Good news: All blood work was NORMAL

Bad news: I had some nasty Inner Ear Virus… you might be asking.. what the heck is an Inner Ear Virus? Yeah I was too, since I had NEVER heard of this before.

My doctor came to the conclusion that it’s most likely an Inner Ear Virus called Labryinthitis. Who knew you could get viruses in your inner ear?! I certainly did not. She said the symptoms would probably go away within a week and that there was nothing she could really do for me since it was a viral infection.. ughh.  While I’m not sure how on Earth I got this virus, I may have contracted it in Florida, and riding on the plane, with a change in pressure, exacerbated the problem. This is all just my speculation though:)

For the rest of the week I rested, ate bland foods (white rice and chicken for four straight days & white toast). I spent some SERIOUS time on the couch watching HGTV, thinking of ways to redecorate my living room (this drove Todd crazy haha) and I just took naps. At least I had my furry companion to keep me company:)

By Thursday I couldn’t stand the couch any longer, so I took Oliver for a two mile walk.  My dizziness had subsided and I needed fresh air!

My appetite finally came back on Friday, when I actually wanted to eat normal food that I like, i.e. veggies. I also started to get my energy back and was less dizzy. I did a VERY slow 30 minute run on Friday and felt pretty good!

By Saturday I had my energy back, hooray! I decided to try training over the weekend with the intention of listening to my body if I started to feel sick. I told myself I would stop biking if I felt nauseous or dizzy.

I felt well enough to bike 2.5 hours on the trainer (longest ride yet!). I watched Boyhood and thought it was a great movie. It just captivated me more than I thought it would, given the previews. 2.5 hours went by in a flash! My legs felt strong and powerful.  I made sure not to push it too much, since I was just getting over my sickness.

On Sunday I ran 14 miles, my longest run yet! I was feeling 100%, but also went into the run knowing I would stop if I felt sick. This long run was down *sigh* on the treadmill. It was in the 40’s outside (like summer around here) and I thought about running outside, but the snowbanks are still SO high and the sidewalks are completely covered under four feet of snow. I opted for the treadmill to play it safe. I actually watched The Meaning of Life and caught up on my second Oscar Nominated film of the weekend. The run went really well and I averaged an 8:13 mile, coaches orders.  I was pleased to find out that this pace felt easy and effortless.  I also had NO knee pain.

My TFL was bugging me for about an hour and then the feeling went away.  It tends to flare up with distance running… does this happen to anyone else? If yes, what do you do for it? My chiro works on it with ART, which helps. I also have been told my adductors are weak, so perhaps this is contributing.

After my long run, we enjoyed a delicious Flatbread pizza with beets AND kale. Beets on pizza might sound weird, but it was sooo good! Beets are also great for recovery post long run:) I need to recreate this pizza on my own!

    i had a really bad inner ear infection (fungal) which caused my ear to feel clogged all the time. Of course this happened 2 weeks before I was flying up to Boston to run the marathon back in 2009. But thankfully I was in full taper mode and the ENT was able to put medicine inside to relieve the pressure. I was fine come race day, thank goodness. I’m sure Oliver enjoyed the extra snuggles. How long are his walks normally? Since my running has been minimal (back/piriformis still not the happiest) Jack gets extra long walks. I have been loving beets too lately. On pizza, interesting?!?! Glad you are feeling better.

      Thank Desiree!! Ugh, ear infections are awful! Glad to hear you were find for race day after getting yours. I didn’t feel any actual ear pain with my ear infection, just the dizziness and nausea, yuck:( Oliver DID enjoy extra snuggles. Although, sometimes I think he likes the house to himself during the day, LOL. I usually taking Oliver on 2-3 mile walks, he does really well with that distance. He also looooves to sniff EVERYTHING in sight, lol. When we hike, it tends to be much longer. Sorry to hear about your back and piriformis, how frustrating! Hope you figure out what’s going on soon:)

    Glad you felt better by the weekend but that virus sounds terrible! Hah of course I thought you might be pregnant too 🙂

    My favorite post long workout meal is a breakfast burrito!

    I was good that you were feeling better by the weekend and got in some really solid training. Oliver did a great job of keeping you company though while you were taking it easy. Our four legged family members can be perfect that way!

    I’m glad you are feeling better and weren’t out of commission for too long!! It is amazing how our four-legged family members now just what to do when we aren’t feeling the best!! Basil always lays with me to keep me company too…Oliver and Basil must come from the same mold 😉

    I LOVE beets on pizza, although sweet potato and kale pizza is probably my fave 🙂 After a long morning workout, I usually refuel with a smoothie loaded with Osmo and homemade eggs and white potato pan fired. It is quick…I think it is time to branch out a bit though 😉

      Thanks Kecia!! Our pups certainly know when we aren’t feeling well! Basil and Oliver sound like they would be friends:)

      Oooh love sweet potatoes on pizza. Anything with Kale is good in my book:)
      I must ask, what is your go-to smoothie with the Osmo recovery?

    Inner ear virus? Wow, that is so strange and as I was reading the post, I can’t lie, I was secretly hoping you were pregnant because I know you and Todd would be such awesome parents!! I can’t really eat much post long runs but after an hour or two, I love just a plain sandwich, lettuce, tomato and turkey. I am simple!

    Ear infections/viruses are no joke. My husband had one a while back and it completely threw him off for a few days. They can be painful and interfere with everything that goes on in the body. I’m glad to hear that you are doing better now. Maybe your body secretly craved the down time you gave it. 🙂

    I MUST try beets on pizza. I have never heard of this before but it sounds amazing. My favorite meal post long run is a burger and sweet potato fries. Something about the mixture of protein, fat, salt, and carbs that just does it for me and makes me feel new again.
