My other life (besides training that is)

Kristin's Camera- Personal 024

Besides training and racing, I love to spend my spare time with my husband Todd and our West Highland Terrier Oliver. We have had Oliver for four years now, since he was a little puppy, and he is the love of our lives! Since we love him and Westies so much, we thought it would be great to volunteer with our local Westie rescue chapters! If it were up to me, we would have 2-3 dogs in the house, but my husband is the practical one! I guess there has to be one, right?

For the past few years, we have been Foster parents to Westies who have been surrendered by their owners or have been saved from puppy mills. Think of it as being a foster parent for a child, but in this case it’s for a dog. We have fostered a total of seven dogs and plan to keep helping out whenever we can. Typically when we foster, we can expect to have the dog for 1-2 weeks, sometimes more. Being a foster dog parent is such a feel good thing! Instead of being put in a kennel or a shelter, these dogs can stay in our home and have a fenced in backyard. We show them unconditional love until they are placed with the perfect family. It is always very bittersweet when they find a family. I am very happy to see them find their forever home, but I am also sad to see them go… how can one not get attached to these little fluff balls?

I am very passionate about helping animals and I even ran the Chicago Marathon in October for TEAM PAWS. I know not every dog can be helped or saved, but I like to know that I’m making a difference! Dogs teach us how to love unconditionally and to live every day in the present moment.

If you are interested in being a foster parent to a dog, check out your local rescue organizations! They will be happy to hear from you, I promise.

Would love to hear about how you help animals!

Your pup is so sweet! That’s so great that you find the time in your crazy schedule to foster. It’s so helpful to rescue groups and think of the difference you’re making in that one dog’s life.
I love dogs and I definitely have a soft spot for Westies. We have a rabbit (hence the reason we don’t have a dog) and have previously fostered rabbits from the shelter we got our rabbits from (we had three of our own at one point, but are done to only one now). I enjoyed fostering, but it is definitely bittersweet. We unfortunately don’t have the time right now, but I would love to in the future.

Thank you!!!! That is so cute that you’ve fostered rabbits! I had rabbits all of my childhood, love them. It’s definitely a little stressful at times (the fostering), but we tend to take breaks between dogs… usually we only have a dog for a few weeks and it’s every month or couple of months that we get a new doggy!

That is such a fantastic thing to do! Does Oliver like all his housemates?
Sadly Harold doesn’t like many other dogs, and I’m allergic to 90% of them. Maybe it’s a good thing, otherwise I’m sure my husband would want to adopt them all!
We donate to our Humane Society a few times a year and take blankets, treats, and toys there. Hopefully it helps!

It’s definitely a feel good thing:) Oliver loves his housemates, for the most part, lol. Oliver is VERY independent and often the foster pups are more affectionate towards us than Oliver is. I look forward to seeing pics of your pup! Oh and so great about the Humane Society.. every little bit helps:)

Aww!! What a lovely thing to do. I’m a huge animal lover 🙂 My dad reeeally wants a Westie haha, but my parents have a cat that pretty much hates dogs, so I guess he’ll just have to keep dreaming for now! :p
